Mr. Big's

When deciding to move to NYC, many factors came into play. One very serious one factor was Mr. Big's karaoke bar. When Erin took me there in February of this year, I fell in love with the collegial atmosphere, the warm karaoke leader guy and the song selection. There are very few acceptable songs to sing at karaoke in Atlanta. In fact, unless you sing frat-classics like "Sweet Caroline," "Keep Your Hands to Yourself," "Material Girl" and so on, you may be in for a lynching. At Mr. Big's, however, you can sing "Under the Sea" from Disney's "The Little Mermaid" or "A Whole New World" from Aladdin and everyone loves you.

Fast forward to last night at Mr. Big's karaoke bonanza, and Erin and I choosing an ambitious first song... Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman." It started out better than it finished, let me put it that way. We followed that up with a rowdy rendition of Gretchen Wilson's "Redneck Woman," which got more confused stares than applause...especially the line, "I don't need no designer tag to make my man want me." I think the double negative really blew the crowd away. We rounded out the evening with one we've performed many-a-time, "It's in his kiss." It was pretty much crap, too. So I resolved that every night until the next karaoke-fest, we shall practice!!!
